Cherokee Regional Medical Center (Cherokee Regional) is pleased to announce that family practice physician Dr. Shelby Wigginton has joined the medical staff and will begin seeing patients at Cherokee Medical Clinic starting Thursday, January 20, 2022.

Dr. Wigginton received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was named the Hugh B. Smith Outstanding Biology Graduate of the year. Dr. Wigginton attended medical school at Texas A&M University College of Medicine where she received her M.D. degree. While at Texas A&M, she was inducted into the College of Medicine’s Gold Humanism Honor Society.  This past summer, she completed her family medicine residency training at Via Christi Family Medicine Residency in Wichita, KS where she received extensive training in obstetrics and c-sections.

Following the birth of their second child, Dr. Wigginton and her husband, Zach, relocated to Cherokee in late November 2021. They are excited for the opportunity to live in northwest Iowa with their two children Jackson and Myla.

“Zach and I are excited to get involved within the Cherokee community,” says Dr. Wigginton. “We have been looking to return to a rural area and a small town for many years now, and are very grateful to have found Cherokee.”

Dr. Wigginton looks forward to the opportunity to practice a full spectrum of family medicine at Cherokee Medical Clinic (located on the campus of Cherokee Regional Medical Center) while also providing hospital and maternity care including c-sections. “Cherokee Regional has provided me with the opportunity to utilize all of my training in many aspects of family medicine,” explains Dr. Wigginton. “I look forward to meeting many new people and providing my patients with total care and support in an unbiased and non-judgmental manner.”

In her free time away from the hospital and clinic, Dr. Wigginton is interested in photography, not to mention she and Zach are avid nature lovers. “Zach and I enjoy hunting, fishing and traveling, so when we visited the community we immediately felt at home in northwest Iowa. There’s an abundance of outdoor adventures we can have with our family here,” says. Dr. Wigginton. “We’ve already had a few opportunities for pheasant hunting and look forward to exploring more of what this area has to offer soon.”

“Cherokee Regional Medical Center is pleased to have another talented, multi-faceted family care physician join our organization,” states Gary Jordan, CEO/ President of Cherokee Regional. “Dr. Wigginton will be offering a full scope of family medical services including obstetrics with c-sections, pediatrics, adult care, wellness care, hypertension, and women’s health just to name a few. She will be a great compliment to the rest of our medical staff, and we look forward to helping Dr. Wigginton build her practice throughout the communities we serve.”
