What to Expect with Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. It works throughout the body and may be used in conjunction with other forms of cancer treatment, like surgery and radiation.
Treatment is usually given in cycles — one or more days of treatment followed by days or weeks of recovery, and then the cycle repeats. It is administered by IV, direct injection or by mouth. You may be given a port in the chest or IV injections in the arm.
Side effects will vary, depending upon the patient, the drugs used and the dosage. You and your doctor will determine the course of treatment that is right for you.
