Public Meet and Greet for Sean Nelson, M.D., Scheduled for Wednesday, August 11th

Cherokee Regional Medical Center (Cherokee Regional) is pleased to announce that Dr. Sean Nelson has joined the medical staff. Dr. Nelson has been seeing patients in the Cherokee Regional Emergency Department since early July and will begin seeing patients at Cherokee Medical Clinic starting Monday, August 16, 2021.

Right out of high school, Dr. Nelson served in the United States Air Force for six years as a structural/construction specialist attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Nelson signed on as a Patrol Officer with the Kimball, Nebraska, Police Department, serving in this capacity for four years until he decided to enroll at Western Nebraska Community College (WNCC) to begin his pursuit of a medical degree by completing his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course work while also taking some general pre-med courses and earning an Associates of Science degree. While at WNCC, he earned the prestigious Board of Governor’s Award.  Upon completing his EMT studies, Dr. Nelson served in that role with the Kimball County Ambulance Service for three years while working towards his medical degree.

Dr. Nelson received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). While at UNK, Dr. Nelson earned the Academic Excellence Award and was also named the Inorganic Chemistry Student of the Year. He then attended Medical School at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he received his M.D. degree. Earlier this summer, he completed his family medicine residency through the Siouxland Medical Education Foundation in Sioux City, Iowa.

Dr. Nelson, and his wife, Heidi, purchased a home and relocated to Cherokee in late June. They are excited for the opportunity to live in northwest Iowa and raise their family in a rural community setting. They have four children-Desyree (20), West (17), Alex (11), and Zoey (1). Heidi is an RN, BSN, currently working as a nurse manager at Siouxland District Health in Sioux City, Iowa, but will be wrapping up her responsibilities there in the next few weeks so she can focus on getting the family settled in Cherokee.

“Heidi and I were looking for a rural community the size of Cherokee to raise our family and establish my medical practice,” says Dr. Nelson. “We have been impressed with all the community has to offer, but more importantly, everyone we have met has been very welcoming to our family.”

In addition, Dr. Nelson is a nature lover who enjoys spending time with his family participating in a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and hiking. “We have already taken advantage of the easy access to a variety of outdoor activities in or around Cherokee,” claims Dr. Nelson. He also likes to undertake home improvement projects as well as tinkering with automotive projects.

Dr. Nelson looks forward to providing a full scope of family medicine at Cherokee Medical Clinic (located on the campus of Cherokee Regional Medical Center) while also providing services in the hospital, Emergency Department and Surgery Department. He has special interests in family medicine, obstetrics (he is C-section trained), and emergency medicine. He is looking forward to practicing and getting to know the residents of Cherokee and the surrounding communities.

“I am excited to practice medicine in a variety of disciplines in a family friendly community where I know I can make a difference,” explains Dr. Nelson. “I want to work closely with my patients to make sure their concerns are heard and to help them to make informed decisions regarding their health and lifestyles.”  In addition, Dr. Nelson is fluent in Spanish and he feels that skill will be of benefit to many within the Cherokee Regional service area.

“Cherokee Regional Medical Center is pleased to have another young, family-care focused physician join our organization,” states Gary Jordan, CEO/ President of Cherokee Regional. “Dr. Nelson will be offering comprehensive family medical care, including obstetrics, where he is C-section trained. He will be a great compliment to the rest of our medical staff, and we look forward to helping Dr. Nelson build his practice, and grow within the communities we serve.”

On Wednesday, August 11th, Cherokee Regional Medical Center will host a meet and greet event to introduce Dr. Nelson to the community.  This come and go open house will be held in the lobby of the Cherokee Medical Clinic from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. This event is open to the public and all area residents are encouraged to join in welcoming Dr. Nelson and his family to Cherokee. Refreshments will be served.
