Obstetrics

Having a child is one of life's most important and memorable events.

Cherokee Regional Medical Center offers one of the most attractive comfortable birthing units in Northwest Iowa. It is designed to make the birthing experience memorable and comfortable for the mother, the baby and the family. In addition to our comfortable rooms, our doctors and nurses will make sure you receive only the best medical care.

Cherokee Regional Medical Center provides a family-centered approach to the birthing process. There are 2 large labor-and-delivery rooms and 3 spacious post-partum rooms. Each post-partum room has a large private bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub, cable TV and a comfortable chair and couch for the new daddy and for anyone that visits. Each room also has a computer connected to the internet, making it easy to email digital pictures of the new arrival. There is also a sunny nursery for the newborn when it is time for the “new mom” to rest.

The professionals at CRMC are here to make sure the birthing process goes safely and smoothly.

Prenatal Classes

Prenatal classes are held at Cherokee Regional Medical Center several times throughout the year. All “first” time mothers and their partners are encouraged to attend these classes. All other OB patients are also welcome to attend. There is no charge for these classes.

Topics include:
  • Prenatal care
  • Labor and delivery
  • Tour of the OB Department
  • Breastfeeding
  • After delivery care
  • Baby care
Pre-Admission Visits

One month prior to delivery, the OB patient and her partner are encouraged to tour the OB Department, visit with the staff to discuss a plan of care:
  • Newborn feeding
  • Policy and procedures
  • Pain management
Postpartum Care

In the midst of all the excitement about the baby, the CRMC OB staff remembers that a new mother is born too! Learning how to adjust, self care and parenting skills are instructed and reinforced by the OB staff.

"Mommy & Me" Visit

Within 24 to 48 hours of your discharge, a home visit will be made to briefly assess your baby and review basic cares. This is a visit that enables the new mother to ask questions and discuss concerns that have come up since returning home from the hospital. The CRMC OB Department provides these visits as part of a complete obstetrical program to facilitate the progression from home to hospital and back to home again.
